The changes in plasma adrenaline [epinephrine, A] and noradrenaline [norepinehprine, NA] and in blood glucose and lactate associated with the 2 types of syndromes of toxicity induced in rats by synthetic pyrethroid [insecticides] were determined. Changes associated with severe tremors (type-1 syndrome) induced by cismethrin (4 mg/kg i.v.) were comparable to those found during the stress imposed by a sustained period of running. The type-2 syndrome, particularly choreoathetotic writhing, induced by deltamethrin (2.6 mg/kg i.v.) was associated with high concentrations of plasma NA and A compared with other stressful situations and was accompanied by hyperglycemia and lacticacidemia. D- and L-propranolol reduced the severity of the motor signs normally seen after deltamethrin, prevented lacticacidemia and reduced the rise in plasma catecholamines. Neither isomer of propranolol prevented cismethrin-induced tremors. For comparison between treatments, data were analyzed by principal components analysis, a multivariate statistical technique. The changes in blood parameters in response to deltamethrin were significantly different, P < 0.001, from those observed in response to cismethrin. When data from all animals were combined, correlation coefficients between the 4 parameters were statistically significant, P < 0.001. Partial correlation coefficients showed significant correlation, P < 0.01, between lactate and NA, glucose and A, A and NA but not between glucose and lactate, glucose and NA or lactate and A.
