Inhalation of 16 to 66 TCID50 of rhinovirus NIH 1734 contained in a small-particle (0.2 to 3.0 microns in diameter) aerosol resulted in infection and illness in each of 8 antibody-free (< 1 in 2) volunteers. There was a prominent clinical picture of tracheobronchitis which presumably represented infection and injury of susceptible tracheo-bronchial sites. This was in contrast to the coryzal syndrome which usually followed nasopharyngeal inoculation of previously studied volunteers. Nasopharyngeal inoculation of 6 volunteers with serum-inactivated virus produced no illness or infection.
