Major peptides have been extracted from sinus glands of the Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus, and purified to homogeneity by reverse-phase HPLC. From the results of amino-terminal sequence and mass spectral analyses and bioassay of the peptides, one of the peptides was considered to be a hyperglycaemic hormone. The complete amino acid sequence of the peptide has been determined; it consists of 72 amino acid residues and has an amidated carboxyl-terminus. Sequence analyses of the other four peptides revealed that they all were structurally related to the hyperglycaemic hormone. All of these peptides were found to be produced by a single individual.
