pathogen, causing violet root rot of apple, mulberry, sweet potato, asparagus, etc.5) Most studies have focused on disease control presumably because of the urgent need for adequate control. Accumulating basic knowledge about H. mompa, including its physiology, genetics, and ecology, is prerequisite. In this paper we report the results from an investigation on the population structure of this economically important pathogen. Population structure based on somatic incompatibility10) has been studied in many fungi and found to vary according to the fungal species and habitat. However, little is known about pathogens of agricutural crops4,7), and nothing at all is known about H, mompa. An apple orchard in Adachi, Fukushima has suffered from violet root rot since the hilltop was cleared in 1984 of its original vegetation which included Pinus densi-
