Aging is associated with significant changes in communication between brain regions, yet the principles governing these changes are poorly understood. Here, we examined the role of age-related glucose hypometabolism by adapting functional MRI data to the Ising model. We found that younger, but not older, brains are poised at a critical point, facilitating switching between specific patterns of integrated and segregated activity, and consistent with decreased energy availability.
