Attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) symptom criteria as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, have evolved over time and have included an adult diagnosis for 15 years. ADHD, however, remains underdiagnosed in adults. Recent advances have increased the ability to identify and diagnose the disorder greatly. In addition to symptoms of ADHD, diagnostic indicators include specific educational, occupational, and psychosocial difficulties. Several rating scales are available to assist in the diagnostic process.
