The phenomenology of the glass transition is briefly reviewed. Four classes of theories for the transition are discussed:rheologicaltheories that account for the temperature dependence of the viscosity and/or relaxation timeτp;kinetictheories that predict the form of the relaxation functionMp;relaxationtheories that explain both the form ofMpand the temperature dependence ofτp; andphenomenologicaltheories that describe the kinetics of relaxation without reference to a microscopic model.
