Two specimens of a soft-bodied medusoid, Peytoia cf. P. nathorsti, are described from the Wheeler Formation of middle Middle Cambrian age in west-central Utah. This extends the observed geographical and temporal ranges of Peytoia, which hitherto has been recorded only from the Burgess Shale of early Middle Cambrian age in southern British Columbia. A superficially similar, but indeterminate, medusoid from the Lead Bell Shale of early Middle Cambrian age in northern Utah is also described. Comparison of total numbers and proportions of genera with hard parts from different formations suggests that the Burgess Shale contains a biota that is probably representative of Middle Cambrian, low-latitude, open-shelf environments in North America.
