Presents an overview of known facts regarding self-recognition in primates, addressing the issue of how some nonhuman and most human primates come to understand that a reflection, televised image, or photograph can be a representation of themselves. Issues of specific focus include: chimpanzees and the revelation of self-recognition; extensions and inclusions of self-recognition in primates; monkeys and the" monkey in the mirror"; the hypothesis of a qualitative cognitive difference; and challenges to this field of study.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
