Ten samples of human skin were obtained from the hip at autopsy. The stratum corneum was isolated and its physical dimension determined. The samples had a threefold range in dry thickness (6.2–19.4 μ) and dry mass (0.797–2.348 mg/cm2) and a twofold range in the number of cell layers (14–28). The calculated dry densities varied greatly (0.88–1.42 gm/cm3) with a mean value of 1.20. Chemical analyses showed that dry density was not simply a function of composition of the tissue but also depended upon the degree to which the cellular materials were compressed.
