IN the previous paper (Hill and Aries, 1971) it was reported that the concentration of acid steroids, neutral steroids and urobilins was much greater in faeces from English and Scottish people than from Ugandans and Indians. In the case of the Ugandans the low concentration of urobilins and neutral steroids might merely be due to dilution, since Ugandans produce a much greater weight of faeces per day than do the English or Scots, but this difference is insufficient to explain the low concentration of acid steroids. Indians produce only twice the daily faecal mass of Europeans, so dilution could not explain their low steroid output. Possible explanations of the differences in faecal acid-steroid concentration include (a) diet, (b) race and (c) environment. In this paper we report an investigation into the effect of age, sex and dietary fat on the faecal concentration of bile acids, neutral steroids and urobilins. The relation between faecal bile-acid concentration and the degree of bile-acid dehydroxylation is also reported.
