A method was described for the chemical modification of human C[image]2 which results in a pronounced enhancement of its hemolytic activity and a marked increase in the stability of the intermediate complex EAC[image] [erythrocyte antibody complement] 1a,4,2a prepared with the modified C[image]2. Both effects are fully explained by the observed increase in activity and stability of the C[image] 3 [3rd component of complement] converting enzyme, C[image]4,2a, following its generation with modified C[image]2. The modification resulting from treatment of C[image]2 with a critical concentration of iodine probably consists of oxidation of 1 or more sulfhydryl group within the molecule.
