The juvenile cancer experience of 1292 children exposed prenatally in 1945 to the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been studied. There was no significant excess of mortality from leukæmia or other cancers. This experience is not consistent with the specific model for carcinogenesis as a result of prenatal X-ray, advanced by another group, which postulates a linear dose-response curve and an estimate for cancer deaths in the first ten years of life of 572 per million person-rad. Only by drastically revising this value for the linear coefficient can the Japanese data be made consistent with this model.
