The special nature of Wilson Harris's fiction has always found its counterpoint in his essays and talks. His seminal investigation of Caribbean writing, 'Tradition and the West Indian Novel' was published by the West Indian Students' Union as early as 1964. That essay and others were collected together into Tradition, the Writer and Society in 1967. The Womb of Space, Harris's analysis of amongst others American writing, was published in 1983, and individual transcribed talks or essays for books and journals have appeared throughout his writing career. Many of these have been collected before in two earlier volumes, the 1981 Explorations: A Selection of Talks and Articles, 7966-1981, edited by Hena MaesJelinek, and the series of lectures given by Harris at the Universities of Cambridge and Liege between 1989 and 1991, collected in The Radical Imagination: Lectures and Talks, edited by Alan Riach and Mark Williams in 1992.
