A seroepidemiologic study of adenovirus-associated virus infection in infants and children.Amer J Epidem94: 359–366, 1971.—A search for complement-fixing (CF) antibodies to the defective adenovirus-associated viruses (AAV) has been performed on the paired sera of 551 hospitalized children as part of an 8-year controlled study of adenovirus respiratory illness. Three groups of patients were studied: 371 children with respiratory tract disease associated with adenovirus infection; 90 adenovirus-negative control children who were clinically free of infectious disease; and 90 adenovirus-infected control children who were asymptomatic. Approximately 30% of the children in each category possessed CF antibodies to AAV types 2 and/or 3; this percentage was similar for each year of the study. All but one of the 32 children with seroconversions to AAV-2 and/or AAV-3 showed evidence for a recent adenovirus infection. There was a significantly greater number (30) of adenovirus-infected children ill with respiratory tract disease with seroconversions to AAV-2 and/or AAV-3 than in either of the other 2 categories (1 in each group). Pneumonia, bronchiolitis, croup, and pharyngitis-bronchitis occurred at approximately the same frequency among children with an AAV seroconversion as among all subjects with respiratory illness. Patients with an AAV seroconversion tended to show the virologic and serologic features of adenovirus infections associated with respiratory tract disease.
