Onchocerciasis is an endemic disease widely established in tropical Africa, especially in the Volta basin. This filariasis may cause serious pathological diseases, in particular irreversible ocular lesions, and even complete blindness. It is not our intention to diminish the gravity of this endemic disease, nor to criticise the campaign to control its vector, Simulium damnosum, which started in the Volta basin in 1974. At the same time, it would be wrong to consider that the presence of this endemic disease is alone responsible for the absence of human life in the valleys of this region of Africa given that, on examination, this is not the only cause. Through a survey of the different approaches dealing with the settlement of the valleys, including recent studies of ORSTOM geographers, this article tries to present a clear picture of the problem, while awaiting results of further resarch work.
