Yoshinori Toyoshima* and T. E. Thompson* abstract: High resistance semispherical bilayer mem-branes of areas as large as 0.3 cm2 were formed from a dec-ane solution of synthetic diphytanoylphosphatidylcholine. These bilayers had a specific resistance of about 9 cm2 and a specific capacitance of 0.38 µ cm-2 at 20 in 0.1 M KC1. Under these conditions, chloride permeability was 6.8 X 10-8 cm/sec. This electrically silent 36C1 flux was found to be about 103-fold larger than the chloride current calcu-lated from the electrical parameters of the system. The chloride flux in the bilayer was independent of the applied
