In recent years, corpus callosotomy has gained international recognition as a safe and effective treatment for selected patients with intractable, debilitating, generalized seizures. Results from recent series have been encouraging: 56% to 100% of patients have had significant improvement in the frequency of generalized seizures, and serious complications have been rare. Many of the candidates for this procedure are in the pediatric age range; recent series have included children as young as 5 years old. Increasingly, pediatricians may find that their patients are recommended for this procedure. Here the reported experience to date is analyzed, and areas for further investigation are pointed out.
