The rate of disinfection of non-proliferating cells of Escherichia coli increases rapidly with rise of temp. above 37[degree]C, with an apparent activation energy of about 137,860 calories. Quinine increases the rate, more so the higher the temp. The new effect of pressure depends on the temp. At 22.5[degree]C, 5,000 lbs. p. s. i. causes a slow disinfection, while at 46.9[degree] this pressure markedly retards disinfection, reducing the apparent activation energy to about 30,710. Pressure is additive to the effects of quinine at the lower temp., but opposes them at the higher temp. At intermediate temp. a reversal of the net effect of pressure occurs in going from 1,000 to 6,000 lbs. p. s. i. A complex of reactions, which, however, conceivably involve the same molecule, are concerned in loss of viability under the influence of the factors studied.
