We developed a new mode of device for accurately quantifying cyanide in blood using two disposable plastic tubes for microdiffusion of hydrogen cyanide instead of a traditional Conway device. The performance of the device was investigated focusing on the efficiency of the microdiffusion process, which represented the percentage of the isolated cyanide after microdiffusion of the spiked cyanide in blood (extraction efficiency), and its reproducibility. Cyanide is a well-known toxic anion that is used in many industrial processes, particularly plating processes and organic syntheses [1, 2]. Because cyanide is relatively easy to obtain despite its toxicity, deliberate and accidental cyanide poisoning cases continue to occur [3–5]. Cyanide poisoning is frequently mentioned in novels; it is a well-known lethal poison even to non-professionals. Cyanide-related legal cases attract a great deal of public attention. People can be exposed to cyanide through intentional ingestion or through accidental exposure (eg, inhalation of gaseous cyanide released through the combustion of polyacrylonitrile fabric or ingestion of food rich in cyanoglycoside)[6, 7]. The possibility of death through cyaniderelated crimes and accidents means that it is necessary to determine whether a cadaver has been exposed to cyanide. Cyanide analyses, particularly quantitative analyses of cyanide in blood, are, therefore, routinely performed in forensic laboratories.
