Experiments were performed on 21 adult cats (2.5-4 kg), which were anesthetized with diethyl ether for initial surgery, which was followed by artificial respiration with a 60: 40 mixture of N20: 0, for the duration of the recording session. The animals were placed in a stereotaxic head holder and paralyzed with a continuous intravenous infusion of 16 mg/hr gallami ne trie thiodide(Flaxedil, May and Baker) and 1 mg/hr toxiferine dichloride (Hoffmann-LaRoche) in 0.9% saline (6.5 ml/hr)(for detailed descriptions see ref 11, 23). The pupils were dilated with Neo-Synephrine and atropine; artificial pupils of 3 mm diameter and spectacle lenses (selected by retinoscopy to focus the eye on a lm tangent screen) were routinely used. Units in the superior colliculus (SC), the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), and the retina were recorded using 4 M NaCl-filled micropipettes. After their tips had been broken to approximately l-2 p outer diameter, the impedance of these electrodes ranged from 4 to 15 megohms at 50 Hz. While we recorded from SC, bipolar stimulating electrodes (tip exposure 1 mm, tip separation 2 mm) were placed stereotaxically according to Horsley-Clark coordinates 14.5 mm anterior and 1 mm lateral on both sides of the midline in the optic chiasm (OX), and 8-9 mm anterior and 10-9 mm lateral in the optic tract (OT), ipsilateral to the recording site. A third stimulating electrode was placed onto the optic disc (OD) in the intact eye contralateral to the recording site (cf. method of Stone and Freeman (45)). While recording in the retina (46), bipolar stimulating electrodes were placed at OX, OT, and in the SC contralateral to the recorded eye. While recording in the LGN, stimulating electrodes were placed at OX and in the ipsilateral SC.In three experiments, when units were recorded in SC, electrical stimulation was applied to the ipsilateral visual cortex (VC). Three pairs of wire electrodes (l-mm bare tips) were inserted 2 mm deep into the area of visual cortex bounded by the stereotaxic coordinates+ 7 and-7 anterior-posterior and O-6 mm
