Gait patterns, including time and distance measurements and ground reaction forces, of 51 normal children were observed. Children (33) were retested once at 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 mo., over a 2-yr period, for a total of 84 gait observations. Time and distance measurements and foot-ground reaction force measurements were dependent on walking speed and the age of the child. An increase in height with age was the major factor in determining the changes in time and distance measurements with age. Average stride length was 76% of the child''s height at a walking speed of 1.04 m/s regardless of the child''s age. The 3 components of foot-ground reaction force (vertical, lateral and forward directions) varied with age up to 5 yr even when normalized. After the age of 5 yr an adult pattern of ground reaction force emerged. Walking patterns of children who were > 4-yr-old did not vary when retested within a 3 mo. period. For children < 4-yr-old, measurements changed due to growth during the 3-mo. period to retesting. Similar changes due to growth were found in children > 4-yr-old who were tested at intervals > 3 mo. apart. This may be clinically useful in the study of the effects of treatment.
