Five species of sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata, Car etta caretta, Lepidochelys olivacea and Dermochelys coriacea, have been recorded from the waters adjacent to Japan (Nakamura and Ueno, 1968). Of these, the former three species were reported to lay eggs on the islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago (Uchida and Nishiwaki, 1981). Expo. Memorial Park Management Foundation (1984) surmised the distribution of nesting beaches of each sea turtle species in the Ryukyu Archipelago based on information from the inhabitants. This report, however, may contain some unreliable data in terms of species identification, since it seems difficult for most inhabitants to identify sea turtle species correctly. Virtually little is known as yet about the distribution of nests and relative frequency of the nestings of each species within the Ryukyu Archipelago, except for a few local records (e. g. Miyawaki, 1981; Kamezaki, 1985). Here I present the results of the survey of sea turtle nests in the Yaeyama Group (exclusive of Yonagunijima and Hatomajima), southwesternmost part of the Ryukyu Archipelago, for the purpose of providing basic data for further biological research on the sea
