Sternberg (1969) stated that when mental processes are executed in series, factors prolonging different processes have additive effects on reaction times. If additional plausible assumptions are met, such factors will also have approximately additive effects on errors. Under these assumptions, factors having additive effects on reaction time in one experiment will also have additive effects in another experiment done in the same way, but with different error rates. These results can be used to augment an analysis of reaction time with an analysis of accuracy; further, experiments measuring accuracy alone can be analysed. The procedure is illustrated with three experiments reported in the literature: a choice task, a lexical decision task, and a memory-scanning task. Speed and accuracy for processes in critical path networks are also discussed. The rate of change of log percent correct with respect to time can be represented as a conservative flow in such networks.
