Five adult Diapterobates notatus (Thorell, 1871) (Oribatida: Ceratozetoidea) were observed attached to the thorax beneath the wings of an adult female Cynomya mortuorum (Linnaeus, 1761) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) captured by pooter from under a stone on Ossian Sarsfjellet, Kongsfjord, Svalbard. Shortly after the death of the fly all five mites left the body. This group of mites displays no morphological phoretic adaptations and are not usually considered capable of phoretic dispersal by insects. This observation of oribatid mite attachment to a dipteran host demonstrates that dispersal by Diptera may be more common than previously thought and may represent a new route for oribatid colonization of the High Arctic.
