The applicability of a mathematical model describing flux during cross-flow filtration of microbial suspensions was tested, to predict performance of commercial modules during scale up. Flux could be calculated within the confidence interval of about 20% for modules up to 1 m2filter area, which are of similiar design as the self-built laboratory tubular and flat channel units utilized to generate the data set for the development of the model. In a rotating filter, however, observed flux was significantly higher than calculated, which is attributed to the different mode to generate shear at the membrane surface. The mathematical model is valid only for conventional modules. With this restriction it can used as a versatile tool to evaluate and scale up cross-flow filtration for the harvest of microbial suspensions.
