Average size of highbush blueberries was found to be related directly to average seed number. Both variables were related directly to pollinator level and time of harvest. Differences in seed number accounted for only a pan of the total variability in berry size when individual berries were evaluated. During the early-season harvest and under conditions of high pollinator levels, seed number accounted for as low as 10% of the observed size variation. By contrast, late in the season or under conditions of low pollinator levels, this factor accounted for as much as 59% of the observed variation in berry size. Probably berry size increased considerably when berries had a high complement of seeds compared with those that had few but after a seed minimum was present further size increased was not proportional to increased seed number. On the average, about 50% of the observed variation in berry size must be explained by factors other than seed number.
