Rethinking the use of the spoken word, both in galleries and in collections research, could benefit museums, especially ethnographic / world culture museums where most artefacts derive from non-literate peoples. Potential advantages are several: from attracting a wider spectrum of visitors to exhibition, through demystifying the work of curators and their colleagues, to etablishing new forms of engagement with the public in various phases of the collection-based research and presentation. The A. outlines some options perhaps worth exploring further and speculates why the verbal has been neglected for so long in the museum field. He suggests that, whilst shifting from monologue to discussion does not undermine the authority of sound scholarship, it should open up serious enquiry to wider participation, at the service not just of disseminating knowledge but also of developing it.
