Underwater sounds of Cephalorhynchus heavisidii were recorded from the west coast of South Africa. The sounds from these porpoises were all low level, pulsed sounds, restricted in bandwidth to less than 5 kiloHertz (kHz), often to less than 2 kHz, with major emphases frequently at around 800 Hz and secondary non-harmonic emphases at frequencies between 2 to 5 kHz. Three basic sound repetition rates were noted—clicks at slow rates, short bursts of pulses, and series of pulses at a rapid enough rate to produce a tonal “cry” sound. The cry sound varied in duration from 0.4 to over 2 seconds and was the most common sound heard. Similar sounds were recorded from C. hectori , off New Zealand, and C. eutropia and C. commersonii off southern South America. These sounds resemble many of those produced by Phocoena phocoena , which also has similar appearance, habitat, and behavior.
