FAGAN, JOSEPH F., III. An Attention Model of Infant Recognition. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1977, 48, 345-359. A model of infants' visual recognition was developed from an attention theory of discrimination learning. The model assumes that one "look" consisting of a chain of 2 covert responses is made when the infant is faced with a novel and a previously exposed target, an attentional, observing response to a dimension, and a fixation response to a cue. Attached to each response is some probability of occurrence. An equation was derived to estimate the probability of infants' observing the dimension(s) providing a novel and a familiar cue in a given situation. Probabilities of observing particular dimensions as sources of recognition were obtained, and these estimates were then used to predict novelty preferences under different conditions. Observed and predicted preferences were in close agreement.
