A systems approach recognizes that complex systems, such as healthcare systems, consist of many components with complex interrelationships. A systems approach seeks to understand the relationships between the components and the whole, to gain a greater understanding of actions and events. Simulation can be used to understand the systems factors that affect healthcare delivery and patient safety, improving the quality and safety of care. This chapter will introduce the concept of systems and human factors and the role of simulation in systems integration. We will then provide frameworks that can be used to apply a systems approach to simulation, review specific case examples, and conclude with an overview of how simulation and hospital infrastructure can integrate to maximize the impact of systems integration.
