Scyphomedusan eggs vary in diam. from 0.03 to 0.3 mm. Gastrulation is by unipolar ingression in the smaller, by invagination in the largest, and of a mixed type in between. Planulae develop when gastrulation is wholly or partly by ingression. Direct development to form medusae occurs when it is by invagination. Planulae give rise to scyphistomae, which in turn produce lateral or basal buds in addition to eventual transfer into ephyrae by strobilation. Strobilation may be monodisc or polydisc, depending on shape and size.
