Material fixed in formalin-acetic and treated with phloroglucin, 12Kl or 4% acetocamine was used to study the fibers of many woody species from Israel and others from Europe. Fresh material was also treated with 2,3, 5-triphenyl-tetrazolium chloride to demonstrate hydrogenase activity as a test of viability. By these means living contents and nuclei were observed in libriform fibers and fiber-tracheids in the entire sapwood of many shrubs and sub-shrubs. Since these life-forms are usually well represented in unfavorable habitats it may be possible that living fibers are adaptive characters. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Authors
