RESULTSThe algorithms of Cohen et al.(1983 and unpubl.) scan a primary sequence for~-helix,/~-strand, and turn patterns. If a sequence fails to meet one or more of the criteria of the a/~ class of proteins, it is not processed completely. The primary sequence of RecA protein was found to have a plausible c~/~ domain from residue 47 to residue 250 (Fig. IA). This domain consists of six putative~-strands alternating with five putative c~-helix regions. The 8-strand regions are about 7 residues long, r regions are between 10 and 14 residues long, and the interspersed turn or" loop" se-
