Site 13HA385 is located within an area termed the Iowa River Greenbelt, a region noted for its distinctiveness and diversity. The Iowa River Greenbelt of Hardin County is an area of exceptional beauty composed of a mosaic of bedrock outcrops, vegetation zones, and landforms somewhat reminiscent of the Paleozoic Plateau of northeastern Iowa. In its native state, this figurative island of rugged valleys, woods, and streams dramatically separate the poorly drained prairie pothole region of the Des Moines Lobe from the rolling, tall-grass prairie of the Iowan Erosion Surface. Additional diversity would have been present immediately to the southeast in the mixed hardwood forest and prairie region of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain.
