Electron micrographs revealed viral particles within mesothelial cells of two cats. Most commonly, particles were associated with the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum. Typically they measured 70-75 mμ in diameter, were limited by a trilaminar unit membrane and contained a ring-shaped hollow nucleoid. The disease was transmitted through five serial passages to 30 cats using both tissue suspensions and 220 and 100 mμ filtrates of the suspension. Much activity was lost after filtration. No other micro-organisms were isolated from infected animals. A proliferative and necrotizing phlebitis was found associated with the disease, especially in the experimental animals.
