The results of a grazing management programme implemented from 1980 to 1983 on a farm on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, where ewes were suspected of being affected by clover disease is reported. The farm had a history of poor lamb marking (30-50% over the previous 8 years) and an initial casual inspection of the pastures revealed a potential phyto-oestrogen problem due toTrifolium subterraneum. A strategic grazing programme was developed so that the youngest ewes fed on the pastures with the lowest levels of phyto-oestrogens. The effect of the grazing programme was assessed from the subsequent reproductive performance of 3 Merino ewe flocks. With strategic grazing, the lamb marking percentages increased to 68% and 73% in 1981 and 1983, respectively, with high lamb mortality rather than low ewe fertility reducing the percentage to 49% in 1982. It is concluded that the strategic grazing management programme reduced the effects of clover disease by ensuring that the youngest ewes had minimal contact with oestrogenic pastures until later in their reproductive lives.
