Acidophilic bacteria Thiobacillus [T. thiooxidaus, I. ferrooxidans] and Sulfolobus [S. acidocaldarius] are able to reduce ferric iron when growing on elemental S as an energy source. Ferric iron was thought to serve as a nonbiological oxidant in the formation of acid mine drainage and in the leaching of [sulfide] ores, but bacterial catalysis may play a significant role in the reactivity of ferric iron.
