A new water-soluble saponin (esculentoside H) has been isolated from the roots of Phytolacca esculenta and identified as 3-O-[.beta.-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 .fwdarw. 4)-.beta.-D-xylopranosyl]-28-O-.beta.-D-glucopyranosyl phytolaccagenin.
