9 For a reflective Banach space, this theorem can also be deduced from results of Lorch, Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 49, 18-40 (1941), and a stronger result can also be proved by using a theorem of Gelfand and Hille. 10 It is well known that any irreducible representation of a compact group by unitary operators in Hilbert space is finite-dimensional. The methods which prove this can be extended to the case of a representation on any Banach space.
