Compact bone of the shaft of the femur of mongrel dogs was reconstructed from serial sections 25-40[mu] in thickness. Three-dimensional anatomy of the Haversian systems were reconstructed with the use of the wax-plate method of Born and phase microscopy. A blueprint was made from photomicrographs and upon these it was possible to follow the course of 8 representative Haversian systems with the aid of a reference marker and tinting with different colored ink. A model, photographed in color, was made of wire in plastic to illustrate that the osteons pursued a diagonal course through the compact bone, occasionally ending blindly.
