The availability of advanced materials and techniques means that lower extremity prosthetic users of all ages and amputation levels can achieve a more complete lifestyle recovery. The key component of any lower extremity prosthesis is the socket. The socket is the foundation for the user's comfort, and comfort is the foundation for restoring a individual's mobility. Dynamic sockets, "high-tech" liners, and individualized fitting practices are key elements in achieving comfort. Various available suspension systems address the needs of virtually all users. Finally, emerging technologies indicate an even brighter future for all individuals who use a lower extremity prosthesis (Fig. 13).
