This paper presents the recent results of the pre-discharge process on a rod-rod electrode under positive lightning impulse voltage. The measurement results of the discharge process will be shown for an air gap length of. Three consecutive phases of discharge before occurring a breakdown have been identified. These are the streamer discharge phase, the channel transition phase and the channel formation phase. In the streamer phase, streamer discharges emerge foremost at the positive rod electrode. Their propagation goes toward the grounded electrode and it is related to the applied crest value of the lightning impulse value. At voltage crest values near the breakdown voltage also at the grounded rod electrode pre-discharges are occurring. Arriving the streamer discharges at the grounded electrode, the discharges propagate in the channel transition phase from the grounded rod electrode to the positive rod electrode, due to recombination and generation. Reaching the pre-discharges at the positive rod electrode again, then the discharges constrict to the positive rod electrode, which forms a channel. Simultaneously, at the grounded rod electrode a channel is also emerging. If the channels of both rod electrode meet each other, then it leads to the main discharge.
