Little is known about the microscopic anatomy of the common bile duct epithelium in vertebrates; in rodents only a few investigations have been carried out using the techniques of histology (Cohen, 1964), histochemistry (McMinn & Kugler, 1961) and electron microscopy (Riches & Palfrey, 1966). The common bile duct is a part of the biliary tree presumed to contain bile of varying chemical composition; McMinn & Kugler (1961) have described different histochemical reactions of the common bile duct epithelia in rodents which have (mouse, hamster) or lack (rat) a gall bladder. In this study the ultrastructure of the common bile duct epithelium has been studied in the rat, mouse and hamster, and following the report of McMinn and Kugler particular attention has been paid to the ultrastructural differences between the epithelia of the rat and the other two rodent species.
