Teratocarcinoma specified antigen SSEA-1, is present on ejaculated sperm, but it is not evident on testicular sperm. We show that SSEA-1 is secreted by the chief cells of the caput epididymis and is then adsorbed to the surface of the spermatozoa during their passage through the epididymis.
