MethodsO'Leary and colleagues recently published a study utilising a broadly useful strategy to merge multiple databases to examine the risk of maternal alcohol use on infant mortality. The study included two time periods for recording maternal alcohol use: first, detection during pregnancy; and second, the year after pregnancy. The study was large and examined 21 841 exposed pregnancies and 56 054 unexposed pregnancies. The study also included 303 infant deaths, classified as SIDS, and 598 infant deaths classified as non-SIDS deaths. The analysis utilised Cox regressions presented as adjusted HRs.
