More than seven million people left the island of Ireland during the ‘long nineteenth century’, putting it at the top of the European emigration league table in that period. At more or less the same time, the Irish Catholic Church underwent a ‘devotional revolution’, enhancing the discipline of both its clergy and laity, extending its physical infrastructure, and imposing Ultramontane orthodoxy on its devotional practices. This chapter asks to what extent these two developments were connected; could there have been an Irish ‘devotional revolution’ without mass emigration? How far was religious change in Ireland a transnational process?
