Estimations of total body K by counting naturally radioactive 40K in the whole body were made on 215 healthy men and 305 healthy women 18 to 85 years old. Total body K decreased with age in both sexes, in men from 56.1 m-equiv/kg to 43.4 and in women from 45.6 to 37.6; at all ages, men had relatively more total body K than women. In both sexes, the trends of the percentages of body fat, fat-free mass and cellular mass were similar although the magnitudes were different; in men fat increased with age from 17.8 to 36.2%, in women from 33.0 to 44.8%; fat-free mass decreased from 82.2 to 63.8% and 67.0 to 55.2%, and cellular mass decreased from 46.6 to 36.2% and 38.0 to 31.3%.
