Our laboratory first became interested in how insulin regulates the synthesis of specific proteins about 8 years ago. At that time insulin was thought to regulate the activity and/or amount of some 50 proteins. The mechanism by which insulin affected the activity of enzymes through covalent modification was reasonably well understood, but the means by which insulin regulated either total protein synthesis or the synthesis of a specific protein was not well defined.
