Several recent studies have suggested a beneficial influence of embryonic neural grafts on the recovery of function of animals with brain lesions or endocrine deficiencies.’s6It is apparent from this work that such grafts can serve as biosynthetic prostheses to supply a vital transmitter or hormone. Other materials, such as trophic substances, which could aid the regeneration of the injured pathways, may also be released by such grafts.’Typical neural transplants, however, are composed of nonneuronal cell types, in addition to specific neurons,’,’making it difficult to pinpoint the source or target of various factors. Thus, homogeneous transplants consisting of only one cell type were chosen for this study so as to identify potential trophic effects and further clarify the direction and nature of cell interactions between neural transplants and the host brain.
